The end of the school year has arrived. And because I’m [almost] an adult, I’m trying NOT to lay on the floor and kick, scream, and cry like a big fat baby. All three kids in the house together with nothing to do! Dear Sweet Jesus in Heaven… SAVE ME!
This will be my first summer as a work from home Mom. I am anticipating total and complete chaos. Someone please talk me off the cliff. Or join me on the cliff. Whatever works best for you.
When I worked full time my two oldest children stayed home during the day- sort of alone. My husband who works overnights was home but asleep. I had to come up with a plan that would keep them from killing themselves. And/or destroying the house. SO… thus began the summer schedule.
Here it is! This years summer schedule. Yep… it looks pretty. What you can’t see though is that I had to add all of these festive stickers because I didn’t have any tape or glue… or anything sticky in the house when I started doing this on my bed at 10:00pm last night. I’m so organized… I mean considering I’d been planning to do this post for like 2 weeks. I had purchased these stickers for my bullet journal but they came in handy big time for this project.
Here’s the few ways we broke our summer schedule down.
DAILY SCHEDULE:
Last summer I created a daily schedule so that the kids wouldn’t sit in front of a screen all day. This year I’m hoping it will help us all stay on track and help me have some kind recourse when they aren’t doing what they’re supposed to. Because if it’s on giant piece of paper then it must be enforceable, right?
CHORES- BY NAME:
Each kid has their specific chores that need to be done on certain days. They earn points when they do their chores. I even added some chores for the toddler. Why? Because I’m an overachieving wanna be? I don’t know. I’m probably a glutton for punishment.
GOALS:
Every summer we come up with something that the kids should be learning. Last year the middle kid learned how to make a sandwich, the big kid learned how to do laundry [you’ll see we’re repeating that again this summer… because we all know 13 year old with ADHD are awesome at laundry]. Now this year we’re embarking on bigger things like mowing the grass and putting away the dishes.
COUNTDOWN:
This year I had some extra space so I added a countdown to a few special dates. Birthdays, musical production dates, vacations, etc. They seemed to really like that part this morning and are excited to cross out the days. By 11:00pm last night… I was ready to punch the countdown idea in the throat… but I’m glad they like it.
POINTS:
Each chore carries points. If they’re completed they get the points. Not completed means no points. They also get points for following the Daily Schedule. They’ll circle the points and add them up for the week. 500 points equals a prize. This is about 50 days which is about the length of our summer. Each kid picks a prize valued at no more than $20 to work towards earning. Usually this is a trip to our local sky zone.
I’M BORED:
Every year at the end of the school year we head out to the discount stores and pick up bunch of crap we probably won’t use. Last year it was one of those brain teaser dot to dot books that looked more like someone sneezed ink on a page and added numbers. My son didn’t even try one. Usually it’s art projects, new books, activity books, bubbles, play doh etc. We don’t spend a fortune but enough to be able to say “We bought you brand new things to do this summer… now stop complaining.”
So because I love all of you so much! I created an awesome download for you. That way you can create your very own summer schedule. It’s a headline printable with the above areas as well as some empty headlines for you. Add your kids names or anything you want to organize! Be amazing and then stop by the Facebook page to leave a picture!
Alright! There you have it! The perfect calendar/summer organization/ chore chart/ tracker/ awesomeness! Don’t forget to stop in to show us your creations when you’ve completed them.
